Creative Commons is a nonprofit organization that enables the sharing and use of creativity and knowledge through free legal tools.

Licenses are offered through a three-layer design:

1. Legal Code layer for lawyers
2. Common Deed or “Human Readable” layer for creators educators and scientists
3. Machine Readable layer for the web
